Setup and Instructions

Signing up for a Virtual Host Account with Spiderlink Web Services is easy.  After filling out our online order form, we setup your account is less than 24 hours.

Domain Name Registration

New domain names usually take 2 to 3 working days to get registered and become operational.  If you have already registered a domain name with another provider and are transferring the name over to Spiderlink, you will need to submit a "Modify Domain" application to the company that you registered your domain thru, which will require approval by either the "Technical" or "Administrative" contact for that name.  Both contacts will receive an email message from the registar requesting this approval.   Either contact can approve the request by replying to that email message and typing an 'A' in the appropriate place.  The registar will provide detailed instructions in the contents of the message.

Uploading/Downloading Web files

Customers with a FrontPage account should visit our FrontPage Instructions for publishing their Web site.

Even before your domain name is approved or transferred, we will assign you a user ID and password which you can use with your favorite FTP program.  FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a program much like the Windows File Manager which allows you to connect to the Web server over the Internet.  Once connected, you can easily upload your Web related files to your Web space.  If you do not have an FTP program yet, we recommend using CuteFTP for Windows95 or Windows 3.1.  You can download it free at http://www.cuteftp.com.

After connecting to the server, you will see a "webfiles" directory on the server (See image below).  This directory is your "Web root", and is where all your HTML documents and images will reside.  Make sure and change to this directory before uploading your files.  Your "home page" file name should be called "default.htm", "index.htm", or "index.html".   This is the HTML file that is first loaded whenever someone types "www.yourcompany.com".   Without this file, your URL will yield an "Access Forbidden" message by the server.
